The Grant in Aid program is given by the South African Social Security Agency. It is designed to give financial support to persons who are not able to earn a living because of their physical and mental liabilities. This program is made for people who require full-time care and are not able to survive independently.

This grant is managed by the Ministry of Welfare and provides allowance every month to eligible persons. The amount provided by this is totally under the control of the SASSA and checked periodically. This checking is done to figure out the effect of the inflation and to verify that their needs are fulfilled or not.

Under this program, every individual will get the amount of R500 monthly. As per the update, this amount will be increased to R510 in October and then to R520 later. This increment makes sure that the persons can meet their needs as the cost of living increases.

Eligibility Criteria for the Grant in Aid Program

The applicants must fulfill the eligibility criteria to qualify for this grant. The eligibility criteria make sure that the needy one gets the extra help. The requirements are as follows:

Existing Social Grant Recipient

The person will already be a member of disability or older person’s grant. In case, the person is applying for this grant first time and needs full-time care then the assessment will be given to the person quickly.

Full-Time Care Need

The persons need another person to take care of him full-time as he is unable to care for themselves due to a physical or mental disability.

Not in a government Institution

The person should be at their home or at a place where there is no government support. If the person lives in a place where government support in form of the money is given then this grant is not needed for that person.

How will The Grant GIA Be Provided?

One can get the payment by the two methods as the application will get approved. The methods are:

• Electronic Deposit: Under this, the grant will directly get transferred to the accounts.
• Institutional Administration: This method is used in that situations, where one is under the care of any institution. The amount will provided into the account of the institution such as a welfare organization.

How to Apply for the GIA Program.

The department sets the steps to apply for the GIA process.

1. Visit the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) office. Bring all the necessary docs.
2. Fill all the details into the application form in the presence of a SASSA officer. Complete the form. The officer will interview to check if you qualify for the grant or not.
3. After the first application, SASSA will send a doctor to the applicant’s home for a medical assessment. This assessment checks whether the applicants require full-time care and qualifies for the Grant-in-Aid.
4. The SASSA will check the beneficiary first whether he/she is eligible or not before sending the doctor.

In case, you are not in a condition to travel to the office then your family member can apply for it.

The nominees have to provide all the necessary docs to complete the application process. The docs include:

• An affidavit
• Original ID docs
• Medical assessment
• Marital status documents

Appeals Process of GIA

In case, the application for the GIA is not accepted by the SASSA they will notify the applicants about this and provide the reason for the rejection. If the applicant wi not satisfied with that reason then they can appeal for this to the Minister of Social Development. The applicants have to provide their appeal within 90 days of the rejection.
