SASSA Care Dependency Grant
The Care Dependency Grant is an initiative of SASSA to help foster parents, parents, or guardians who are looking after disabled children. Children who have a physical or mental disability and need 24-hour care are the target of the Care Dependency Grant.
The Care Dependency Grant is covered under the Social Assistance Act. The children of the age group of 0 years to 18 years are eligible for the SASSA Care Dependency Grant. The SASSA handles the monthly payment for the Care Dependency Grant to help the children meet their basic needs, such as medical care, food, and other requirements.
Monthly Amount /Benefits of SASSA Care Dependency Grant
The South African govt wants families to support their child who has a disability or any illness and the govt provides monthly payments to the families so that the families can help their children to live a better life. In 2024 in the April month, the monthly amount of the Care Dependency Grant was increased by the govt.
Earlier the benefit was R2090 before April 2024 and now the benefit is R2180. SASSA has announced that from October 2024, the amount will be again increased to R 2190 per month. The SASSA transfers the Care Dependency Grant amount to the bank accounts of beneficiaries on the 05th or 07th of each month. The people can plan the expenses for the whole month when they know the date of the transfer of money under the Care Dependency Grant.
SASSA Care Dependency Grant: Required Documents
The eligible families have to submit the following documents when they apply for the Care Dependency Grant.
- Medical Report: This grant is for the medically unfit child, so the family has to deposit the medical certificate.
- Income Proof: The financial status of the family should be eligible for the Care Dependency Grant and they have to submit income proof that the family does not have sufficient funds to look after the unfit child.
- Marital Status Proof: The SASSA has to know the status of the person whether he/she is single, married, divorced, or widowed. If you have relevant documents, then submit them.
- Identity Document: The person can submit the birth certificate or a 13-digit bar-coded ID as identity proof for the Care Dependency Grant.

Care Giver Eligibility Standards:
- The parent, foster parent, or legal caretaker of the child can apply for the Care Dependency Grant.
- The person must have a citizenship of South Africa.
- For a single person, the annual income should be less than R223,200.
- For couples, the combined annual income should be less than R446,400.
- The annual income limit is not for the foster parents.
Child’s Eligibility Standards:
- The age of the child should be less than 18 years.
- The child should have a stringent physical or mental disability that needs full-time care and special attention.
- The child should have citizenship in South Africa.
- The children who are living in government-run permanent care facilities can not apply for a Care Dependency Grant.
